Transforming Education with AI: A Professor's Journey

A Professor at Jeppiaar Institute of Technology in Chennai is transforming the way students learn by introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools into their classrooms. Let's dive into her story to see how AI is transforming education and shaping young minds.

In this insightful interview with a Professor from Jeppiaar Institute of Technology, Chennai, we explore how AI tools are transforming education. From hands-on practice with real-world problems to fostering critical thinking and creativity, the integration of AI in teaching is reshaping learning experiences. The professor also highlights challenges, ethical considerations, and the importance of using AI responsibly in education.

#1: AI as a Teaching Partner

In her classes, the Professor uses AI tools to bring learning to life. Instead of just explaining theories, she lets students experience them firsthand. "We use AI-powered platforms to solve real-world problems, like building a machine-learning model or analysing data," she explains. These tools offer instant feedback, helping students learn from their mistakes quickly.

There is even an AI chatbot in her classes. This one answers ordinary questions from students freeing up the time of a Professor to make more challenging lessons.

"This way learning becomes interactive for me and gives me the leeway to make in-depth conversations on complex issues, " she shares with a grin.

Seeing the students engage with AI so actively brings her immense satisfaction, but it also highlights the varied reactions these tools can evoke.

#2: The Excitement and Challenges of AI

When students first encounter these tools, mixed reactions are observed—most express excitement, fascinated by the chance of working with cutting-edge technology. However, not everyone takes it easy. "Some students, especially those without much programming experience, struggle at first," the Professor admits.

But she doesn't give up on them. With patience and guidance, even the most hesitant learners grow more confident. "The bigger challenge," she notes, "is India's uneven access to technology. In some areas, unreliable internet and low-quality devices make it hard for students to use these tools effectively."

Despite these hurdles, the transformative potential of AI in education continues to shine.

#3: Boosting Creativity and Problem-Solving Skills

Students then get to use AI tools with incredible results. While they learn to approach the solution of problems systematically, this "hands-on" process engenders critical thinking and breeds creativity.

“The magic happens when students start brainstorming new ways to solve problems,” she says proudly. “They try, fail, and try again. That’s where true learning and creativity bloom.”

Teaching Responsibility with AI

For the Professor, it's not only teaching technology but teaching responsibility as well. She ensures that her students understand the ethics of AI. They discuss dangers such as biases in AI models, the use of data responsibly, and real-life examples of how AI has gone wrong.

We emphasise that AI should never replace human thought," she explains. "Instead, it should enhance it. My students learn to see AI as a tool to add value, not take over."

Through her groundbreaking teaching methods, this Professor is shaping a new generation of innovators who view technology not just as a tool but as a catalyst for meaningful change. By fostering a blend of technical expertise, ethical awareness, and creative problem-solving, she is empowering students to navigate an AI-driven future with confidence, purpose, and responsibility. Her efforts ensure they will not only excel in their careers but also contribute to building a smarter, more equitable world.
