Welcome to The First Post in The AI Nine O Series, Where We Present Easy-to-Digest AI Concepts in Ninety Seconds.
We're Living In An AI Spring! This period of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence (AI) began over the last decade [1], with exponential growth in prominence over the last two years. But what exactly is AI? In this post of AI Nine O, we aim to break down AI into easy-to-understand terms.

#1: What Is AI?
Think of it this way: Why are humans unique? It's because we can:
Think
Create
Solve complex problems
Write and speak
Learn and reason
AI, or artificial intelligence, is a way for machines to acquire these human-like abilities. It enables computers to learn from data, create new things (like images and videos), think, speak, reason, and solve problems like humans [2].
AI was first introduced in 1956
Alan Turing is the father of AI
Let's see how it works.
#2: How Does AI Work?
Let's travel back to your childhood: How did you learn to talk and recognise your parents or teachers? How did you know that 2 times 2 equals 4? By listening, seeing, thinking, and repeating, right? AI learns similarly.
A computer is given billions of pieces of data in different forms:
To learn (output) | Data (input) |
Learning and generating responses | Text |
Listening and speaking | Audio |
Identifying | Images |
Understanding actions | Videos |
Algorithms involving mathematical equations find patterns between inputs (data) and the expected output. This process is repeated many times to improve accuracy. Just as repeated exposure to words and sentences helps us understand and use language effectively, consistently feeding data into an AI system (Computer) enables it to learn and develop patterns. Finally, we get an AI model capable of predicting the outcome when given a user's input.
#3: Examples Around Me
ChatGPT[3] is an AI model that can generate text such as essays, poems, and short explanations given input from the user side called prompt.
Tesla Optimus [4] is a humanoid robot that uses advanced AI to learn its environment.
