Inching Towards the Future: Small and Big Leaps in the AI Paradigms

Updated: Nov 26, 2024

Welcome to a quick read on the incredible ways machine learning is shaping our everyday lives. In just 90 seconds, get a glimpse of how AI is enhancing gaming, improving lifestyle choices, and making transportation more efficient.

Machine Learning Is A Branch of artificial intelligence that enables algorithms to uncover hidden patterns within datasets, allowing them to make predictions on new, similar data by learning from data already present.

#1: AI in Gaming

We train an AI model on certain data, let’s say “types of puppies”, and it learns from that training. This is machine learning. Ever notice how enemies in a game seem to get smarter as you play or how the world around you feels like it’s reacting to your every move? Take The Last of Us Part II, for starters. The non-playable characters (NPCs) feel eerily real, reacting to you in ways that make you wonder if they’re actually human [ARXIV, 2022]. AI also gives developers a helping hand, building massive, detailed worlds and even figuring out what kinds of gameplay we love most.

#2: AI in Lifestyle

Spotify curates the perfect playlist for your mood [ARXIV, 2021], Amazon knows what you’re probably going to need next, and Netflix somehow always has a show suggestion that hits the right spots.

AI looks at what you like, what you do, and what you might need to serve up tailored recommendations that just make sense.

Health apps even use AI to suggest workouts that match your fitness goals, while smart gadgets like Alexa or Google Nest turn your home into an automated land of action. It’s like having a perpetual virtual assistant that keeps life running smoothly.

#3: AI in Transportation

Getting from point A to point B has never been smarter, thanks to machine learning. Self-driving cars are powered by AI, using data to figure out when to brake, turn, or navigate tricky intersections [JAIR, 2022]. Companies like Waymo are at the forefront of this tech, with their autonomous vehicles already driving passengers in select cities. By analysing traffic and passenger patterns, machine learning even helps cities design bus and train schedules that make sense, cutting down on wait times and frustration.
