In recent years, artificial intelligence has evolved from a passive tool to a system capable of making decisions independently—a shift known as agentic AI. To get a deeper understanding of agentic AI, let’s explore what that really involves.

Agentic AI

Agentic AI refers to AI systems that exhibit autonomous decision-making, goal-oriented behaviour, and continuous learning while interacting with dynamic environments (Hosseini & Seilani, 2025).

1: What is Agentic AI: A Simple Breakdown

To understand what agentic AI is, let’s consider an example. A user asks standard AI to draft an email. The AI will write exactly what you ask for. However, give the task to an agentic AI, and it refines its tone. It schedules the mail, handles responses, and manages follow-ups. It has a sense of initiative that allows it to plan, prioritise, and act with minimal human input.

“Agentic AI is poised to revolutionize how we interact with artificial intelligence, promising more autonomous and goal-oriented systems.” — Marr, 2024

2: Innovation and Instability: Rethinking Agentic Intelligence

The autonomy of agentic AI allows it to respond to dynamic situations. It can take initiative and adapt to new information beyond predefined instructions. This presents immense opportunities, which is why its adoption is growing across industries. However, this very technology also raises ethical concerns.

“A recent study highlights the legal and ethical challenges that arise with the transition from traditional AI to agentic AI, where systems proactively execute processes and make real-time decisions.” — Mukherjee & Chang, 2025

3: Designing the Next Chapter of AI

The rise of agentic AI requires us to focus on value-aligned collaboration. The AI systems we build must reflect human intent and uphold ethical integrity. Agentic AI must be a tool that doesn’t become complicit in addressing inequalities, climate change, and more.

“It has been argued that ensuring beneficial integration of AI systems in human societies while minimizing risks requires these systems to align with human values.” — Khamassi, Nahon, & Chatila, 2024

4: The Future of Agentic AI

As we look ahead, the future of agentic AI appears promising yet complex. The technology is advancing rapidly. This means we must remain vigilant about its implications. The potential for agentic AI to enhance productivity and efficiency is significant. However, we must also consider the ethical ramifications of its use.

4.1: Enhancing Efficiency

Agentic AI can streamline processes in various sectors. For example, in healthcare, it can assist doctors in diagnosing diseases. In finance, it can analyze market trends and make investment decisions. The efficiency gains from agentic AI can lead to better outcomes and cost savings.

4.2: Ethical Considerations

While the benefits are clear, ethical considerations cannot be overlooked. The deployment of agentic AI raises questions about accountability. Who is responsible when an AI system makes a mistake? Additionally, there are concerns about bias in AI algorithms. Ensuring fairness and transparency is crucial.

4.3: The Role of Regulation

Regulation will play a key role in shaping the future of agentic AI. Policymakers must create frameworks that promote innovation while protecting society. This includes establishing guidelines for ethical AI development and deployment. Collaboration between technologists, ethicists, and lawmakers is essential.

4.4: Public Perception and Trust

Building public trust in agentic AI is vital. People need to understand how these systems work and their benefits. Education and transparency will help demystify AI technologies. Engaging with communities and addressing their concerns is necessary for acceptance.

4.5: The Path Forward

The path forward for agentic AI is filled with opportunities and challenges. As we harness its potential, we must remain committed to ethical practices. The goal should be to create AI systems that enhance human capabilities without compromising values.
